Conversational Spanish continues from the Early Elementary program in the Fifth Grade. In Grades 6-8, students begin a formal Spanish Language reading, writing and grammar program. All students participate in the National Spanish Exam.
Latin continues in Grades 5-8 and is integrated with English Grammar. English grammar and Latin grammar are compared and contrasted for greater understanding. Latin becomes more demanding with an emphasis on grammar and Roman history.
Students compete in the National Latin Exam, the National Mythology Exam, and the Certamen Classics Competition which In 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 our team came in 1st in the Chicago Junior High Division.
Greek begins in Grade 7. A focus is on the alphabet, but the emphasis is on Ancient Greek culture and its relevance today. Students are introduced to the ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; they learn about the road to democracy through biographies of Solon, Lycurgus, and Pericles; they study Greek tragedy and the origin of drama; and they get a flavor of bias in history as they read Herodotus.
