Sixth Annual CGS Talent Show

May 27

CGS Talent Show is one of the most favorite and highly anticipated events of the year.  Students enjoy both performing and watching their classmates perform. We can't wait to see what treats are in store this year.  In the past, we have been regaled with comedy sketches, puppet shows, and dramatic recitations, vocal and instrumental musical performances, classical, folk, and hip-hop dance routines, gymnastics, acrobatics, and magic tricks. This year, families will be welcome to attend via zoom link.

Memorial Day – No Class

May 31

Memorial Day:  to many it means a day off of work or school, time for a picnic, the Indy 500 and parades, the unofficial start of summer, and a license to wear white shoes.  The solemnity of the day is often buried beneath the roar of NASCAR, a tummy full of BBQ and fun in the sun.  So while we enjoy the time off, let us remember the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, "Those who have long enjoyed such privileges…

Labor Day – no class

September 6

Much of the world celebrates International Labor Day on May Day (May 1) with parades and rallies, but not the United States.  Why do we celebrate with BBQ's on the first Monday in September and not on May Day? Here's the short answer:  May Day's origins can be traced right here in Chicago, where the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions mounted a strike on May 1, 1886, as part of its quest for an eight-hour workday.  A couple of…

Indigenous Peoples’ Day / Columbus Day – No Class

October 11

It used to be simple:  celebrate the discovery of America and enjoy the day off.  Today, it's more complicated; and that's a good thing.  That being said, we recognize that Indigenous Peoples' Day/Columbus Day classroom lessons must be developmentally appropriate:  we begin with identifying who, where and when before analyzing why.  All classes participate in activities that raise awareness of the rich history, culture, and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.  And while our youngest students chant "Columbus…
